An ancient temple complex on a hilltop at the entrance to Qutang Gorge — the most dramatic of the Three Gorges — where Li Bai, Du Fu and Liu Yuxi all wrote some of their most celebrated poetry. The gorge visible from the hilltop is the image on the back of the 10 RMB note.

"Several hours from Chongqing by high-speed rail to Fengjie, then 40 minutes by taxi to the site. Ticket around 100 RMB. Take out your 10 RMB note and find the viewpoint — the real gorge and the banknote image are close but not identical due to artistic adjustment and risen water levels post-dam. For the most dramatic perspective, take the 50 RMB observation boat from the dock at the mountain base — it goes directly between the two massive cliff walls of Qutang Gorge and the vertical scale from water level is extraordinary. Autumn mid-November to December is best for red leaves."
