About this place
Where the Yangtze cuts through Tongluo Mountain — one of Chongqing's 'mini Three Gorges.' Historically a strategic military chokepoint, the gorge still contains Song Dynasty fortress ruins built to resist Mongol forces and WWII anti-aircraft artillery positions.
Drifter says
"Don't stop at the standard viewpoint. Descend along the cliff paths and find the massive mid-river boulder known as the Iron Gate Reef — ancient armies once stretched iron chains across the Yangtze here to block enemy ships. Watching modern ten-thousand-ton cargo vessels slowly negotiate the same ancient shipping lane and its lethal whirlpools delivers a compression of history that's hard to find anywhere else."
