About this place

The 1737 cenotaph of Ba Manzi, a general of the ancient Ba Kingdom, preserved in the remarkable setting of a modern commercial building's basement.

Drifter says

"The story is straightforward and devastating: during a civil war in the Ba Kingdom, General Ba Manzi borrowed troops from a neighboring state to restore order. When the neighbors came to collect their payment — a portion of Ba territory — he refused to divide the kingdom. Instead, he severed his own head and offered it in place of the land. His sacrifice is considered one of the roots of Chongqing's reputation for honor and keeping one's word. Above ground, the street is all noise and traffic. Below, it's as quiet as a different century. Locals hold this place with genuine reverence — keep your voice down."
