About this place
As the oldest surviving Catholic church in Chongqing, St. Joseph's Church (Ruose Tang) is a living testament to the city's modern history. Originally established in 1893, the building bears deep historical scars: it was severely destroyed by Japanese aerial bombing in 1939 during World War II, and the current structure is the result of a major restoration completed in 1946. Featuring a blend of Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements, it stands today not as a commercialized tourist attraction, but as an active, practicing place of worship serving the local Catholic community in the heart of the Yuzhong District.
Drifter says
"Navigation Warning: This church is notoriously difficult to locate. Do not trust the physical street signs in the surrounding area, as most of them point in the wrong direction. You must strictly follow the precise GPS pin and reference photos provided in this guide to find the correct entrance. Landmark Tip: The church is situated directly adjacent to a hotel, which can serve as a visual anchor when you are close. Etiquette: Unlike other historical churches that have been converted into pure tourist sites, St. Joseph's remains an active religious venue. Visitors are highly encouraged to visit, but please maintain silence, dress modestly, and respect the ongoing prayers and services."
