A historic staircase street connecting Chongqing's upper and lower city, recently restored to its traditional architectural appearance. Despite the name, Shibati is not eighteen steps — over a hundred years ago, this route had eighteen rest platforms spaced along its length for porters and travelers.

"Commercial now, especially in the upper sections, but the lower end still holds some of the old Bayu atmosphere. Come at night when the lanterns are lit — that's when the restoration work earns its keep. A quick walk through takes an hour; if you want tea, food, and a slower pace of history, budget two to three hours."
