About this place

The mountain restaurant credited as the birthplace of Chongqing's Geleshan Spicy Chicken, founded in 1986 by the Zhu family who spent three years developing the recipe that eventually spread across China.

"Taxi to 199 Oujia Bay on Geleshan — about 40 to 60 RMB and 45 minutes from downtown, or 20 minutes from Shapingba. No reservations, walk straight to the third floor where it's less crowded and the mountain view is better. Staff speaks fast local dialect — use a translation app and point at 辣子鸡. You order a whole live chicken by weight, usually 200 to 300 RMB total. What arrives is a plate that is almost entirely dry red chilies — finding the crispy pieces buried inside is not a side effect, it is the dish. Bring at least three people."
