A large ancient Buddhist complex built around Huayan Lake in the western suburbs, one of the most genuinely tranquil spaces within the city limits — and home to a vegetarian restaurant where monks produce some of the most technically accomplished meat-simulating tofu and mushroom dishes in Chongqing.

"Take Metro Line 5 directly to Huayan Temple Station. Free entry. The vegetarian restaurant doesn't require reservations for simple meals — walk in and point at what looks good. Best season is summer when the lotus pond blooms fully. The giant outdoor golden Buddha deep in the complex is worth finding."
