About this place

A centuries-old complex of temples and shrines on Ming Mountain dedicated entirely to the Chinese afterlife — featuring Naihe Bridge, hell courts with demon judges, scenes from the eighteen levels of hell, and statues rendering the entire Chinese bureaucracy of the underworld in vivid, theatrical detail.

Drifter says

"About 2 hours from Chongqing North Station by high-speed rail, then 15 minutes by taxi from the station, around 20 RMB. Ticket around 80 RMB. Important context: much of the complex was rebuilt after Three Gorges Dam flooding — come for the theatrical experience of Chinese folk religion's vision of death, not ancient ruins. The Chinese folk belief holds that every soul must report to Fengdu after death, which explains why locals tend to stay indoors after dark. Before you leave, find the local mala chicken — it's a cold-tossed preparation totally different from the deep-fried version in downtown Chongqing, and you won't find it elsewhere."
