The Chaotianmen-Danzishi ferry line was the core water artery carrying over a hundred thousand commuters daily before the river bridges existed — one of the last surviving routes still operating with genuine commuter function.

"Two yuan gets you the exact same river perspective as a 150-yuan sightseeing cruise. Don't go to the passenger cabin — stand on the lowest deck near the diesel engine. When the ferry forces its way into the confluence where the Yangtze and Jialing move at completely different speeds, you feel the deck shudder violently against the opposing currents. That physical sensation is something every tourist boat deliberately avoids. This is the real river."
