The historic original campus of Chongqing University, preserving elegant 1930s Republican-era red brick academic buildings shaded by enormous old banyan trees, centered around the Democratic Lake that has changed little since the university was founded.

"Want to escape the malls and spend a few hours somewhere that actually has depth? This is one of the most underrated walks in the city. Come between late November and early December when the ginkgo trees turn gold — the whole campus becomes a pilgrimage site for local photographers. Take Metro Line 1 to Shapingba Station and walk. Bring your passport in case security asks."
