"This is the best place in the area to observe Chongqing's early East-meets-West architecture. Look at the building details carefully: traditional eastern Sichuan timber-frame courtyards with Western round-arch windows and Roman columns grafted on. The slightly awkward but vital fusion records the collision when an inland city first encountered Western civilization. Buy local tea and handmade ceramics here — more authentic and cheaper than any tourist shop, and the owners are usually happy to talk quietly about their craft."
