A 1980s state-owned factory workers' residential compound sitting directly behind Ciqikou's main tourist street, still standing and still inhabited while everything around it gets redeveloped.

"Find the small uphill alleys heading away from Ciqikou's main street. Narrow staircases, retro balconies packed with potted plants, original brick dormitories. The elderly residents are unfazed by visitors — they have their own slow-paced lives and you are simply passing through. Keep your camera respectful. This kind of unreconstructed old work-unit housing is disappearing faster than people realize. Spend 20 minutes here before diving back into the tourist noise."
