Designed by German firm gmp, the building's double-layer insulated glass cladding was specified to resist the fierce winds and ship horn noise at the two-river confluence — its glowing crystal form anchoring the Jiangbeizui modern CBD.

"The greatest surprise is at the building's base. During winter low-water season, follow the dirt path beside the theatre down to the exposed Yangtze riverbed. Stand on the bare cobblestone river floor: above you, the vast alien structure emits a cold green glow; directly ahead, Hongya Cave blazes in full illumination. This is the single most spatially explosive vantage point in all of Chongqing — the city's layers collapsing into one impossible frame. The shallow reflection pools in the plaza above also offer one of the best foreground angles for night photography of Hongya Cave across the river."
