About this place

A historic street where Republican-era Western architecture meets traditional local building styles. The name carries a story most visitors never hear: an ancient Yunnan official transporting a white elephant to the emperor found the animal refusing to move at this exact spot. When local masters confirmed the site had exceptional fengshui, the place was named White Elephant Street.

Drifter says

"Quiet and relatively uncommercial, which makes it ideal for moody, cinematic street photography. The old city wall sections here go almost entirely unnoticed by mainstream tourists. Walk a few minutes toward the river from Huguang Guild Hall and you arrive here naturally — the two sites make a logical pair."
